Hoboken on the River Schelde, Antwerp. Right Bank
Client: Waterwegen en Zeekanall NV
Architect: Johann van den Noort
Timing: 2010
The Problem

The yacht club at Hoboken is located on the right bank of the River Schelde, close to Antwerp. In spite of being many miles inland, the river is tidal at this point and at times of very high water and tidal surge from the North Sea, the industrial areas in the immediate hinterland are at risk of flood.

The many dykes protecting the region had to be cut in order to allow access points and slip ways into the river which meant that these potential points of ingress needed to be protected.

This was a challenging project, since case metal tracks were embedded on the slipways leading down to the river which meant that any flood protection system had to work with these crossed directly over the path of the barrier protection.

The Solution

Solution was to cut out sections of slipway rail and secure them to the top of the barriers so that the function of the slipway was not impaired.

Two barriers, set approximately 200 metres apart and each 8m x 1.5m high installed.
